Among the most common reasons wood floors smell is pet urine. Unlike carpeting or rugs it is a big and expensive project to replace the wood. Hydrogen peroxide 3 mixed with water is often the cheapest and most effective solution for animal urine cleaning. High humidity and water damage can also cause a floor to smell musty because of mildew and mold.

However it is possible to remove the urine smell from your wood floor if you use the right products. Last winter i removed the vinyl to uncover the wood floor which i then sanded stained and polyurethaned. Wood by its nature is porous and will stain and absorb odors. You can remove most smells in wood floors with cleaning products.

Urine is the most challenging of all odors to remove from wood as ammonia in urine penetrates wood fibers quickly. When i moved in three years ago the wood floor had 1960s vinyl installed over it which took months of repeated cleaning to get the urine smell out of. It was absolutely revolting. Simply moisten the rag or soft absorbent cloth like felt and apply to the spot.

This is what the bathroom floor looked like. It was quite a mess and really smelly. That s when we realised that the dirt and urine must have soaked right through the carpet into the floorboards. The wood floor is emanating urine odor gag.

Allow the rag to sit for few hours to thoroughly remove the urine stain and odor from the hardwood floors. Of baking soda and 2 small drops of dish detergent and stir.
